The Second-fastest Growing Tourism Region in 2024/25
According to a recent report by Africa Outlook, a resurgence in travel and investment sees Eastern Africa poised to be the world's second-fastest-growing tourism region in 2024/25. This is echoed by the latest African Hotel & Hospitality Confidence Index, which showed 80% of industry respondents expressing growing confidence and optimism.
π¨ Ugandaβs profile rises in Africa hotel investment pipeline
Uganda will see a huge boost to hotel rooms in the coming months as key projects under development reach completion. The country has made a huge comeback in the regional hotel investment pipeline.
Emerging African hospitality chain, JW Marriott, Hilton, Latitude Zero and Nobu hotels are some of the active projects. According to consultancy W-Hospitality Groupβs Africa Hotel Pipeline Report for 2024 that was initially released in March, there are eighty-three active or planned hotel projects with 12,076 keys in the six countries that make up the East African cluster.
Hotel pipeline breakdown:
-
Ethiopia β 29 projects, 5,026 keys
-
Kenya β 24 projects, 3,155 keys
-
Tanzania β 11 projects, 1,335 keys
-
Uganda β 9 projects, 1,376 keys
-
Rwanda β 6 projects, 597 keys
-
South Sudan β 4 projects, 587 keys
-
Democratic Republic of Congo β 10 projects, 1,341 rooms (43.8% in construction phase)
Uganda stands out because of a higher actualization rate. A high 97.1% of projects are active, with only 2.9% at the planning and pre-construction phase.
There are many reasons to be optimistic about the future of the hotel industry in Africa.
π Harnessing the tempting power of the Pearl of Africa
Uganda is on the brink of unlocking its full tourism potential. Uganda is a multi-cultural country with diverse landscapes.
It is also home to the highest remaining number of endangered mountain gorillas.
The great ape is one of Ugandaβs main tourist attractions, along with Chimpanzees, and more than a thousand bird species.
Uganda is probably the most naturally diverse country in Africa.
-
Kidepo Valley National Park could convincingly form the setting for future The Lion King sequels.
-
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest could be the same for Gorillas in the Mist or Tarzan.
-
A walk along the shores of Lake Bunyonyi contrasts with the nearby wilderness where lions and leopards roam.
-
White-water rafting on the Nile in Jinja requires imagination to realize the contrast with cattle herds in the arid Karamoja region β just hours away.
In addition to its natural riches, Ugandaβs population is highly proficient in English and among the most welcoming in the world.
With 56 indigenous ethnic groups, Uganda is also extremely diverse in culture.
Given these assets, many visitors to Uganda feel they are experiencing Africa at its finest.
π’ International hotel chains move to Uganda
While big international hotel chains such as Sheraton and Marriott were already present in Uganda, Hilton has now also announced a new hotel in Kampala, and Latitude β an international chain of boutique hotels β has just opened in the city.
These chains respond to a growing demand in the high-end market and may be anticipating increased interest due to the emerging oil industry.
β Potential for coffee tourism as an emerging niche market
One of the most mentioned niche markets with high potential in Uganda is coffee tourism. This has been promoted especially in the hilly parts of Western Uganda and the slopes of Mt. Elgon, and is on the rise.
π§ Eastern Loop itinerary development
As an alternative to Ugandaβs western tourism loop (Entebbe, Lake Mburo, Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale Forest, Fort Portal), an eastern loop is emerging, following:
Jinja β Sipi Falls β Kidepo β Murchison Falls
π Regional tourism integration
On an international level, the East African Community is working toward the integration and development of the sector in all its member states.
Efforts include the East Africa Tourist Visa β although Uganda is not yet benefiting from this to the fullest, according to some sources.
β¨ Final Note:
Let us seize this moment, embrace the challenges, and work together to create a thriving and sustainable tourism landscape that will make our nation a must-visit destination for the discerning traveler.
