Gorilla Trekking Guidelines

Gorilla trekking rules and regulations are designed to promote the conservation of the largest apes on earth in their natural habitats: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park, across Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

General Rules to Follow

• Maximum of 8 trekkers per gorilla family each day.

• Children below 15 years are not permitted for gorilla trekking.

• Maintain a 7-meter distance from the gorillas at all times.

• Visitors who are unwell should not participate, as gorillas are susceptible to human diseases.

• Keep your voice low during the trek. Feel free to ask your guide questions.

• No smoking, eating, or drinking in the presence of gorillas.

• Spend a maximum of 1 hour with gorillas during the trekking experience.

• For habituation experiences, you are allowed up to 4 hours.

• When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas.

• Do not touch the gorillas; they are wild animals and unpredictable.

• No littering in the park. Leave no trace behind.

• Flash photography is prohibited.

• Stay together with your group; do not scatter when near gorillas.

• Avoid direct eye contact, as this may agitate the gorillas.

• Always follow your park guide’s instructions carefully.

• Wash your hands before beginning the trek.

Additional Advice

• Don’t hesitate to ask your park guide any questions, including when you need to use the toilet—they are there to assist you.
