🐾 BIG FIVE SAFARI

When on safari, the animals you will be looking for from the start will be The Big 5. Seeing these 5 species is an incredible experience and one that you will not forget. Africa’s Big Five β€” comprising the lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo β€” carries a legendary status that has long captivated the imagination of adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.

🦁 LION

Famously lazy, lions are most active in the early morning, late afternoon and at night, when temperatures drop. Lions sleep up to 23 hours per day and, unusually, the lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park often sleep in trees (Tree climbing lions).
The most social big cats, lions live in prides which may number up to 20 individuals. Males are larger than females and have distinctive manes around their heads and upper body.

Preferred Habitats: Savannah and acacia woodlands
Where to See Them:

  •     βœ… Queen Elizabeth National Park

  •      βœ…  Murchison Falls National Park

  •      βœ… Kidepo National Park Uganda

πŸ† LEOPARD

The African leopard exhibits great variation in coat color, depending on location and habitat. Solitary and secretive, leopards are typically active in the cooler morning, late afternoon, and at night β€” although you may be lucky to spot them during the day.

Known for tree climbing and an exceptional ability to adapt, the leopard survives on a broad diet and thrives in areas with dense vegetation, using its camouflage for stealth.

Top Spots in Uganda:

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park

  • Murchison Falls National Park

  • Kidepo Valley National Park

  • Lake Mburo National Park

  • Semliki National Park

πŸ‘‰ Mweya Peninsula and Kasenyi Plains are particularly good areas to look.

🐘 ELEPHANTS

The world’s largest land mammal, elephants are incredibly intelligent, empathetic, and social. Adults can weigh up to 6 tons and are constantly on the move, day and night, searching for food.

They love swimming and mud baths, and can be seen in swamps, woodlands, and open plains. Bulls may form bachelor herds, separate from females and calves.

Where to Spot Them Year-Round:

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park

  • Murchison Falls National Park

  • Kidepo National Park Uganda

🦏 RHINOCEROS

Rhinos have roamed Earth for over 50 million years. Their skin, up to 5cm thick, acts as natural sunscreen. Despite poor eyesight, their hearing and smell are extremely sharp.

Though calm-looking, they can be aggressive if threatened. Herbivores by nature, they feed on leaves and branches.

🦏 Our White Rhinos
Located in Nakasongola district, Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch is the only place in Uganda where you can see white rhinos. The ranch is also home to diverse birdlife and other wildlife β€” a true adventure destination.

πŸƒ BUFFALOS

The African buffalo (Cape buffalo) is a powerful and tough animal, weighing 500 – 900 kg and standing about 1.5 meters tall. Found in massive herds of over 1000, they stick close to water and open grasslands.

Known for their unity, buffaloes defend one another when in danger. Older males often roam in small groups and are known for their fierce nature.
